The OSU Comprehensive Kidney Stone Program

This program offers surgical and non-surgical treatment options using the most advanced equipment, including intraoperative, latest-generation endoscopy as well as lithotripter and laser technology.  It provides patients a full range of kidney stone treatments and a continuum of care through its metabolic clinic.  Bodo Knudsen, MD, a urologist with expertise in kidney stone management and lithotripsy, leads the program.  He is also working closely with the graduate medical education office in the College of Medicine to develop simulators for medical students and residents.

Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy is a non-surgical treatment option that uses shock waves to break up stones in the kidney, which are then flushed out in the urine.

As part of our mission to provide personalized health care, the OSU Comprehensive Kidney Stone Program features a state-of-the-art dual-focus lithotripter. This machine enables physicians to adapt the focal size of the shock wave to the specific anatomic conditions of the patient, ensuring greater accuracy and success.

The Ohio State University Medical Center is the only central Ohio hospital or health system to be ranked as one of the Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report in the specialties of urology and kidney disease.
